Our bid for London Borough of Culture has now been submitted, but our work to make Southwark the most culturally exciting place in London never stops. Here we’ll be sharing some of the highlights with you. Be sure to check the Southwark Presents diary for the latest events in your area.
Frozen in Time
Emergency Exit Arts and Output Arts brought us on an illuminated voyage of discovery to reveal stories from the River Thames past that lay hidden in the ice. A lantern procession led by a gigantic mechanical Old Father Thames wound its way through the neighbourhoods around Blackfriars Road with a spectacular finale at Mint Street Park. Commissioned by Southwark Council with support from Arts Council England and our friends at Bankside Open Spaces Trust and Illuminated River.
Illuminate Rotherhithe 2017
This free five day festival at the end of November was a celebration of Rotherhithe’s rich history, through talks, music, dance and a lantern procession. The origin of Illuminate is the quote from William Bradford’s journal: “…as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many”. See more images on our Flickr page.
Southwark Park Fireworks 2017
A beautiful cold and clear night on 5 November 2017 was perfect for our fireworks display. The crowds enjoyed live performances, food, drink and the funfair – and then with a ‘whizz’ and a ‘bang’ the fireworks began.
